Tovolo Sphere Ice Molds (2.5-Inch)

Large-format ice is not an affectation — it is functional engineering. A single 2.5-inch ice sphere has dramatically less surface area relative to its volume than a standard ice cube tray produces, which means it melts more slowly, dilutes your spirit more gradually, and keeps the drink cold without watering it down before you finish it. For a well-made Old Fashioned or a whisky served on the rocks, the difference between standard ice and a large sphere is a materially better drink from first sip to last.

Tovolo's sphere molds are the practical answer for home bars that want this result without the investment in a commercial directional freezing setup. Each mold produces a single 2.5-inch sphere from a two-piece silicone assembly that aligns reliably and releases cleanly after a brief thaw at room temperature — about 30 seconds out of the freezer is enough. The silicone is food-safe and odor-neutral, which matters because ice picks up refrigerator smells rapidly. A set of two molds running continuously produces enough spheres for a serious evening of whisky drinking if you start freezing a day ahead.

The spheres produced by consumer silicone molds will have some cloudiness at the center — caused by dissolved gases and impurities freezing inward from all surfaces simultaneously — but this does not affect flavor or melt rate in any meaningful way. If optical clarity is a priority, directional freezing tools are available at higher cost. For most home bartenders, Tovolo's result is more than satisfactory and the molds are dishwasher safe, stack flat in a freezer drawer, and last indefinitely without degrading.
