Scoring Framework

How SpiritVerdict Scores Spirits

A structured 100-point evaluation system grounded in balance, complexity, finish, typicity, and value — applied consistently across categories.

The 100-Point Scale

90–100
Exceptional. Category-leading structure and integration.
80–89
Strong recommendation with minor structural tradeoffs.
70–79
Competent but limited in balance, clarity, or finish.
<70
Not recommended.

Scores are relative to category. An 88 bourbon is not directly comparable to an 88 Islay Scotch. Context matters.

Evaluation Criteria

Balance

Integration of sweetness, bitterness, acidity, oak, and alcohol heat. Imbalance reduces structural integrity.

Complexity

Depth and layering of aroma and flavor beyond intensity alone.

Finish

Length, clarity, and evolution after swallowing.

Typicity

Alignment with declared style and production intent.

Value

Price relative to structural quality within its tier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an 85 rating mean?

An 85 indicates a strong bottle with minor structural limitations. It is a solid recommendation within its category.

Are scores comparable across categories?

No. Scores are relative to category expectations. A bourbon score cannot be directly compared to a gin or mezcal score.

Does SpiritVerdict accept paid rankings?

No. Affiliate links may appear, but scoring is independent and not influenced by sponsorship.

Are tastings conducted blind?

When possible, yes. Blind tasting reduces brand bias and improves consistency.
