Laphroaig 10 Year Old Review

The world's most divisive dram — intensely peated, medicinal, briny, and utterly unlike anything else. You'll either love it immediately or need time to get there.

Overview

There are whiskies you appreciate, and then there are whiskies that rearrange your understanding of what whisky can be. For many drinkers, Laphroaig 10 is the latter. Produced at a distillery on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay — where the Atlantic winds, the peat bogs, and the centuries-old traditions all converge — Laphroaig 10 is an extreme whisky that makes no concessions to mainstream taste.

The peat used to dry the malted barley here is cut from Islay's unique bogs, imparting a phenolic character measured at around 45 ppm (parts per million) in the malt. After distillation, the spirit is aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels, then bottled at 40% ABV. The distillery is one of very few that still malts a portion of its own barley on-site using traditional floor maltings.

Laphroaig holds a Royal Warrant from King Charles III, who reportedly enjoys it neat. If that's not a recommendation, what is.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Pale gold to light amber — lighter than you'd expect given how enormous it smells. The ex-bourbon casks don't add much color, which is true to form for Islay malts matured in American oak.

Nose

Brace yourself. The nose is an immediate, confident assertion: peat smoke, seaweed, iodine, and a distinctive medicinal quality often described as antiseptic or TCP. These descriptors may sound off-putting, but in context they are fascinating and completely compelling. Behind the peat, there's a surprising sweetness — vanilla from the bourbon casks, a hint of citrus, and something almost floral. The smoke doesn't just sit on the surface; it has layers — barbecue smoke, smoked fish, damp earth. With a few drops of water, the nose opens significantly and a creamy, almost honeyed note emerges beneath.

Palate

Bold entry. Peat smoke arrives immediately and without apology, followed by brine, seaweed, and iodine. The ex-bourbon influence adds a thread of vanilla and coconut that keeps the whole thing from being one-dimensional. There's a citrus note — lemon, perhaps a bit of lime — that cuts through the smoke and provides lift. The medicinal quality that defines the nose translates to the palate as an almost cooling, menthol-like sensation amid the warmth. At 40% ABV, the spirit is slightly underproofed for such an assertive flavor profile; some of the complexity gets muffled.

Finish

Long, smoky, warming. The peat smoke lingers persistently, morphing slowly from fresh campfire to deep, earthy, slightly tarry smoke. The sea salt returns at the very end. The finish is genuinely memorable — the kind that stays with you for a full ten minutes.

Context and Value

The 40% ABV bottling is the standard expression, but the Select and Quarter Cask expressions offer additional complexity and proof if you want to explore further. Water is highly recommended with the 10 — even just a few drops transforms the experience.

Laphroaig has an active Friends of Laphroaig program that grants members a plot of land on Islay. It's marketing, but charming marketing. The brand's personality matches the whisky: uncompromising, singular, proud.

Verdict

Laphroaig 10 is not for everyone — and it would be a lesser whisky if it were. It is exactly what it is, without apology or softening. For those drawn to smoke and coastal character, this is the essential Islay expression and one of the most distinctive drams in the world. The rating reflects the quality, complexity, and singularity of the liquid. If you've never tried it, you owe it to yourself to find out which side of the Laphroaig divide you fall on.
